Who gets to tell your story? This is a project by and for LGBTQIAPN+ folks that invites you to share yours and listen to other LGBTQIAPN+ stories. The writing and telling of stories will take place online, via Discord, an online platform that we will use as our gathering spot.
Who is behind this project?
This is a project by Marginalia Making at NC State, led by Dr. Fernanda Duarte, Dept. of Communication, NC State, and NEEPEC, a Brazilian research group in Performance and Gender Studies, led by Dr. Juarez Dias, Dept. of Communication, Federal University of Minas Gerais. This project is sponsored by the Wellness and Belonging Grant offered by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at NC State University.
And why are you doing this?
The goal of this project is to engage with storytelling as a strategy to empower folks through autobiographical effective writing, and create visibility for LGBTQIAPN+ life stories in ways that affirm the legitimacy of our life experiences and processes of identity formation. The LGBTQIA+ population has its existence made invisible or stigmatized by narratives produced by others. This project creates a space for folks to write their own accounts of their life experiences, encouraging other forms of social visibility.
When and where will it take place?
We will gather online via Discord from April 8, until April 12, 2024. To join our Discord server, click here.
How does it work?
Through April 8th and 12th, we will offer creative inspiration and writing prompts every other day over our Discord server. You are free to respond to as many, or as few, prompts as you wish. Mediators will share prompts that are organized by themes that will inspire you to reflect on aspects of your identity. You are not required to share any information that can identify you and may use an alias if you wish.
What are the requirements to participate?
You must be 18 or over, identify as part of the LGBTQIAPN+ community, be interested in storytelling, and have access to Discord. You don’t need any previous knowledge or skills to join, but you need to have internet access and use Discord either on your phone or computer.
Is this a writing workshop?
This is not a workshop or a course to teach you how to write well. This is a collective space for creating and sharing personal stories through active listening and empathy. This is a safe space to share yours and learn about other LGBTQIAPN+ life stories.
How can I sign up?
Registrations are open from March 30th to April, 7th, 2014.
By clicking on <<I WANT TO PARTICIPATE>> you will be directed to the “Who gets to tell your story?” server on Discord where our online gatherings will take place. You must have a Discord account in order to accept this invitation. Discord accounts are free to create. Once you have an account and have accepted the invitation, you will land on the #welcome page of our server and be automatically assigned a member role. You will also be asked to respond to the Pronun Picker selection prompt pinned at the top of the welcome channel that will give you an additional role with your preferred pronouns. You may select multiple options or change them at any time. Once you access the server, you must go over our community guidelines and agree to them in order to participate in this experience.
How do I install Discord?
To download and install Discord on your desktop computer go to this link. If you wish to use Discord on your mobile device, follow these instructions. Watch this video for a walkthrough of the Discord interface, if needed.
What if I sign up and change my mind?
That’s ok. If, for whatever reason, you don’t want to continue in the group or take part in the project, you can leave without any problems. But if you want to tell us why and if there’s anything we can do to help, we’re here for you!
I still have a question. Who can I talk to?
More information about the project can be requested by emailing Dr. Fernanda Duarte at fduarte@ncsu.edu.
